Description

In 1929 Josef von Sternberg hired an unknown Berlin actress, singer and housewife to play the leading role in his film “The Blue Angel”.

Now it is 1975, Marlene Dietrich takes the stage at Carnegie Hall: this is her last major appearance. The story goes back to 1929 Berlin. There, despite protests from his lead actor and producer, director Joseph von Sternberg selects Dietrich to play the pivotal role of Lola in his film “The Blue Angel”. Its success leads to a contract with Paramount Studios, but with it comes demands to amend her appearance and behaviour. She finally achieves a stardom with main role in “Morocco”. While Marlene enjoys her fame in Hollywood, the National Socialists take control in Germany. Marlene is fully committed to supporting the Americans against Nazi Germany. She publicly distances herself from the Nazi regime and becomes an American citizen…

The film tells the life story of Marlene Dietrich and is largely based on the biography written by her daughter Maria Riva. At almost 18 million German marks budget, Marlene was at the time the most expensive German film production in post-war history.

“The actors in ‘Marlene’ are top-notch, right down to the supporting roles, and contribute to two very entertaining hours.” – Moviemaster.de

“Well-photographed two-hour entertainment with beautiful and sometimes atmospherically dense images. Katja Flint is a convincing main character: the resemblance to the real Dietrich is almost astonishing in some scenes.” – CinemaMusic.de

“Excellent make-up, good production design, a brilliant Katja Flint, and wonderful camera work.” – Prisma.de
