Description

The year is 1990 and Germany has been newly reunified. German teacher Udo Struutz decides that his family should go on their first vacation in the “west” to relive Goethe’s Italian Journey in their family Trabant 601 (“Trabi”).

The Struutz family in Bitterfield near Leipzig are getting ready for their first holiday in what used to be “capitalist” foreign fields. Inspired by Goethe’s writings, they plan to head for Italy, “To see Naples and die”. So, the family sets off for the Alps in the fully loaded Trabant, the East German family car, attached to its owner Udo by eternal love-hate relationship and affectionately called “Schorsch” (George). Of course, this doesn’t go without some money trouble, bad luck and breakdowns: Rita has an accident, Jaqueline runs away, the family is robbed and the “Trabi” doesn’t always turn out to be as reliable a vehicle as the manufacturer advertised. And a special treat is a visit to the Bavarian relatives. The Wall separated East and West for quite a while…

It was the first major box office hit of reunified Germany.
