Description
Rise and fall of an Italian crime empire.
The Camorra boss known as “The Professor” manages and administers the reformed Camorra from prison. Helped by his faithful sister Rosaria, the man escapes from the penitentiary and creates a powerful criminal organization that manages to infiltrate all levels of society.
Oscar-winning director Giuseppe Tornatore’s vintage TV, shot in 1985 as part of an innovative production mounted by Italy’s glorious Titanus shingle and Silvio Berlusconi’s ReteItalia, is being unearthed from the vault 37 years after the mobster Raffaele Cutolo – considered one of Italy’s most brutal bosses who ruled over as many as 10,000 Camorra affiliates from his jail cell – reportedly sued production companies for libel and quashed the show before it aired.
“It is impossible not to notice Tornatore’s mastery of the medium: at the time, the director was not even thirty years old and was already dealing not only with a challenging theme, but also with an impressive production for a debutant. Tornatore’s courage to show violence without hesitation can really make one understand a social climate in Italy in those years. ’The Camorrist’ is a job well done.” – Moviestruckers.it
“Thanks to Tornatore’s vision, who confirms himself as a visionary at these times, we have an extremely dynamic product, decidedly modern, that can be absorbed without any difficulty even by today’s viewer.” – Hynerd.it
“A great show. It looks like something that has come out of the shadows and re-emerged, and indeed it has, capable of leaving the audience speechless and unsettling them with tight dialogues and moments of very high tension. And just watching the series today, one realises how ahead of the game Tornatore was at the time of filming.” – VelvetCinema.it
