Tom Prentiss returns to the ancestral estate on the Isle of Wight after studies at Harvard. He wants to present to his family his fiancée Samantha “Sam” Gordon…

Tom’s father, along with Tom’s little sister Becky, is happy about his son’s engagement to the pretty American. But when Tom tells that he will not take over the family business, and will instead open a gliding school in the USA, tensions arise. A reunion with Virginia Brody, Tom’s ex-girlfriend, who has been wheelchair-bound since a mysterious accident, also causes unrest.

Virginia’s brother Matthew and mother Ruth hate Tom, blaming him for Virginia’s sailing accident a year ago. The accident ruined Virginia’s career as a singer. Matthew has now accumulated debts to the record company and is plotting revenge. Sam feels neglected by Tom, who is spending more and more time with Virginia, and finds support in Tom’s best friend, Mike, who has secretly been in love with Virginia for many years. Sam fights for Tom, but even a heated argument between Mike and Tom doesn’t stop Tom from asking Virginia to be his wife. He will stay on the island, take over the family business, believing that by choosing responsibility over his love, he is doing the only right thing. Samantha then secretly leaves the Prentiss estate to return to the USA. Little Becky follows her. When Tom realizes his mistake, he jumps into one of the powerboats to intercept her. Virginia insists on coming along. Matthew has tampered with the boat. An accident occurs…
