Description
A small town prepares for the homecoming of superstar Roxy Carmichael, as does a young outsider, who believes Roxy is her mother.
Although Roxy left town more than fifteen years ago, her memory has never faded. Roxy is abandoning the bright lights of Hollywood, California, and returning to her small Ohio hometown — at least long enough to dedicate a city building. And now the whole town of Clyde is bracing for Carmichael’s return, most of all her now-married old flame Denton Webb and troubled teen Dinky Bossetti. An orphan with few friends, Dinky is convinced that Carmichael is her birth mother, and that the actress will reclaim her when she returns.
“Best of all is Winona Ryder, who gets to play a brilliant teenager, as she did in ‘Heathers’. It’s almost automatically comical to hear such a clear, emphatic and intelligent voice coming out of a kid. But Ryder also works that oddness for dramatic advantage, creating with Dinky the sense of a great spirit temporarily stuck in a child’s body.” – San Francisco Chronicle
“As she demonstrated in ‘Beetlejuice’, Ryder has a talent for these haunted adolescents. She has a real darkness in her, which she translates easily into comedy, and in some of her scenes here, she’s touchingly funny and even moving.” – The Washington Post
“The feeling for teenage life is as good as a John Hughes movie, and Ryder gets good support from Jeff Daniels and while the failure to realise Roxy’s character left a number of the film’s view viewers unsatisfied, ‘Welcome Home’ is a Waiting For Godot story in which the anticipation reveals more than any Hollywood ending could.” – Film Authority
