Little Marie Kerstner disappears during a nursery school field day in the woods, leaving no trace behind.

While searching the area, Inspector Oliver von Bodenstein and his partner Pia Kirchhoff come across the body of a suicide victim: Senior Prosecutor Hardenbach, who used his hunting rifle to kill himself out in the woods. Could Marie’s disappearance be connected to his death?

But soon, another body is found: beneath a castle tower lies a dead young woman – Isabel Kerstner, Marie’s mother. At first glance, it looks like suicide, but the dead woman is missing a shoe, which cannot be found on the tower or in the surrounding area. Von Bodenstein orders an autopsy. This reveals that Isabel was driven to her death…
