But when the greedy cutthroats threaten Oliver’s only chance for happiness, the gentle-hearted boy must summon the courage to fight for his freedom and future.
“British film of “Oliver Twist” is a superb piece of motion picture art and, beyond doubt, one of the finest screen translations of a literary classic ever made.” – The New York Times
“This version of “Oliver Twist” is well worth a watch to see how great black & white movies can be with Lean’s craftsmanship making it something extraordinary.” – The Movie Scene
“It is the first of Lean’s films to attempt an epic scale with real confidence and assurance. When set against some of the overblown visuality of the later work, Oliver Twist may be the very best of Lean’s ‘big’ films.” – BFI screenonline
