Description

The retired Chief superintendent Jakob Franck who often had to inform relatives as a death messenger, now hopes to lead a life beyond the dead.
Jakob Franck has delivered news of a loved one’s death more often than he cares to remember, and in retirement he is finally hoping for a less morbid life. But the past soon catches up with him when the distraught Ludwig Winther, whose wife Doris has just hanged herself, lays the blame at Franck’s door. Two years earlier, Franck had spent seven hours silently consoling Doris after the death of her 17‑year‑old daughter Esther – an encounter that was unusual even for someone as experienced with the bereaved as he is. The police investigation at the time concluded that Esther had died by suicide, but Ludwig has never accepted this verdict and is convinced his daughter was murdered. Franck feels compelled to reopen the case and, using his idiosyncratic blend of empathy and instinct, set out to uncover what really happened to Esther.
