Description

Jean Valjean, convicted of stealing bread, is hounded for several decades by the relentless and cruel Policeman Javert.
In late eighteenth century France, in the middle of the French Revolution, the unemployed woodman Jean Valjean is arrested for stealing bread to feed his family and sentenced to five years in prison in Toulon. He tries to escape from prison due to the mistreatment from cruel Javert, increasing his sentence. Nineteen years later, he is released, but forced to carry identification that labels him a thief. Years pass, and Valjean has made a new life for himself as the mayor of a French town. But his secret past comes back to haunt him when his old adversary suddenly makes an appearance.
“If you’re in it for the Valjean/Javert story, this is a great version to watch.” – hyperborea.org
“This 1978 adaptation despite being made for TV boasts an impressive cast with both Richard Jordan and Anthony Perkins delivering captivating performances in the roles of Jean Valjean and Javert.” – The Movie Scene
“The acting is quite good, in particular from Perkins, who has both a charismatic presence and a hint of danger to him. He can be cruel when he needs to be, and always interesting even when merely lurking in a corner with a frown on his face.” – Charity’s Place
