An exhilarating, music-driven portrait of a young woman’s rise through the Rio favela baile music circuit, reclaiming her agency in a world that tries to consume it.
In a neon-lit Rio de Janeiro favela where radical joy is an act of resistance, MC Sabrina, a fearless young queer talent, catches the eye of an influential music producer. Thrust into the spotlight of the global music industry, she must navigate aggressive attempts to “whitewash” her sound and her identity-stripping away her roots for commercial consumption. Back home, her mother-a broken pioneer of the Baile Funk scene-looms over Sabrina’s rise like an open wound: a warning of stolen youth, a mirror of potential failure, and the last thread connecting her to who she truly is. To become the voice of a new, unapologetic generation, Sabrina must fight to reclaim her music, her body, and her roots-entirely on her own terms.
“One of the best films at Tribeca Festival 2026. Crackling with energy, the film plays like a Brazilian funk version of ‘A Star is Born’.” – The New York Times
“Electrifying musical drama!” – Screen Daily
“If you’re looking for a film that feels like a party, Funk delivers it. Driven by an all-night pulse of energy, it’s anchored by the irrepressibly magnetic Duda Santos as MC Sabrina.” – Vogue
