Description
In 1969, Dr Bertram Wainer is called out to tend to a young woman dying as a result of a backyard abortion. When Wainer investigates the illegal abortion racket, it leads him into a dark and murky world.
After being summoned to tend to the daughter of old friends who is dying as a result of an illegal abortion performed under unsanitary conditions, Dr. Wainer becomes enraged and vows to take a stand against the forces that have allowed this dangerous industry to thrive. Before long, the irreverent and mischievous Wainer finds himself in the dark world of criminals, backstreet abortionists, nervous doctors who perform abortions safely but illegally, and desperate women. Making matters worse, he uncovers a secret system of graft extending into the Melbourne police force. The elite Homicide Division is actually running the racket.
“This isn’t a Hollywood film. But the actors are solid and the story is both true and moving. The movie does have a great flow, wonderful costumes, and lovely set design. I definitely recommend this film. 5 stars for this heroic, and true-life story.” – Amazon
“This is a powerful piece of film making on a very important story. The acting is mostly very strong, particularly Susie Porter and William McInnes, and the overall pacing and direction is first rate. It’s a story that must be told.” – IMDb
